|Richard W. Moore|
I studied studio art and art history while receiving a B.A. in English from Yale University, followed by an M. Div. from Union Theological Seminary and an M.A. in non-fiction writing from the University of New Hampshire. (And that was a long time ago.) I learned photography from many fine photographers, including Neil Maurer (later of San Antonio) and Paul Caponigro, then teaching in Danville, Connecticut; more recently in New Hampshire with Douglas Prince, Gary Samson, and my prime critical friends Sarah Flause, Jay Goldsmith, Carol van Loon, and Amos Desfosses.
From 2005 to 2019 I worked on "twice-seen images"--composites of old photographs in historic locations with contemporary images from the same camera positions. I chased historic photographs through institutions in New Hampshire, Monhegan Island, Maine; and Athens, Greece. I rephotographed in the steps of those early photographers and put together images of past and present in the same place.
In 2020, even before the pandemic, I felt the "twice-seen" projects were finished. I began a photographic exploration of roots, evidence of things unseen. In the course of that I rediscovered the wonders of birch bark from the fallen trees of our woodlot. I began by printing a photograph of birchbark on that same piece of bark, a study of the relationship of image and object.
As the pandemic grew, we moved to Burlington, Vermont. I made more elaborate compositions of bark itself and conventional images. These experiments evolved into photographic images of my new urban environment printed on large pieces of prepared bark.
Thank you for your interest in extreme photography.
