  • In 1928 Edward Redfield stood in front of the Island Inn painting the dock.  Mary Townsend Mason stood on the porch painting Redfield at his easel.  In 2012 Sandra Mason Dickson, Mason's granddaughter, painted the same scene.

  • The woman who happened into this image is Iris Miller, a poet of the island, who has trudged this hill for decades.  Sometime after she had seen this image, she mailed me a profoundly moving poem based on the picture and the bitter-sweet passage of time.  The poem became the final word of Monhegan Come Again.

  • The five-masted schooner on the horizon was one of the Palmer fleet, built in Waldoboro around 1900, for shipping coal and timber.  It foundered and sank off Provincetown in 1912, where it provides a recreational diving site today.
